Prometheus

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!

So it’s taken me until now to think of how to word this. I’ve never been so conflicted over a film in my life. For starters I love Alien, more than anything. It’s a major point in my life and one of the reasons I got into film making.

I came out of Prometheus feeling mostly disappointed. Ok. I loved the look of the film, the ship, the head all of that. I thought the casting was ace. Fassbender was amazing as always and Noomi was a good leading lady. Did the ship need that many crew members? No, most of them were very pointless. The tone was okay for a modern film, not a scratch on the original but it was okay. I wasn’t scary nor thrilling as I was expecting. I liked the 3D. I thought, especially towards the beginning, it was great. The best 3D I’ve seen since Avatar.

I do HATE and I mean HATE the whole we came from human like beings. For me that killed the film. If it had been anything else the entire film would have been better. The look of the creatures was crap and lazy. I hated the idea of the iconic space jockey was actually just a dude in a suit. That is what mostly makes me disappointed. Moving on from this I also thought the creature design was crap. A squid thing kills the dude and that makes the xenomorphs? Really? The lame looking xeno at the end didn’t bother me because okay thats the beginning, that’s fine.

Other than that it was great. If it hadn’t been related to Alien it would have been better and I probably would have loved it but because it’s meant to lead on to the others it was a mistake. Maybe it was my fault I expected something too Alienesque when I knew it wouldn’t be that. It doesn’t bother me that there were barely any answers to the questions it poses. Ridely Scott has publically said this film wouldn’t give them and to wait for the sequel. He also said that if it came to pass that the second would be even less related to Alien so maybe it will be better. I hope with a second that it will reveal all and then in hindsight the first looks amazing. I also was expecting the surgery scene to be better. Seeing as Ridley compared it to the chest burster scene, no. I was also sad to see how un- giger like the derelict type ship was compared to the original. It looked a whole lot less organic. Also clearly it wasn’t the same one as in the original as there was no chest bursted jockey, which I swear was bigger in the original.

I don’t hate the film, this isn’t like my reaction to Indy 4. I’m glad Rid has returned to sci-fi and done a proper sci-fi that asks questions of it’s audience. It’s just the one major plot point that I hate. But then maybe I would have always hated it, it wouldn’t ever be what I was expected and what I wanted who knows. As much as I’ve moaned about it I do think it’s the best Alien related film since the second. I really don’t get on with 3 or 4 at all. I think I might need to see it again to make up my mind. Right now I don’t know how to feel about it. For average movie going people who don’t hold Ridley’s previous science fiction in such high regard it’ll be great. One thing for sure though, it’s made me VERY worried about Blade Runner 2…
